Wall Board Panels: Adding Texture to My Feature Wall

 

I wanted a textured feature wall in my bedroom but didn't want wallpaper (hard to clean) or paint (boring). I installed wall board panels — specifically, slat wall panels (wooden slats with gaps). The panels are made from oak veneer on MDF, 1.2m x 2.4m each. The cost was 2,500 AED for a 3m x 2.5m wall. For a modern, textured look, wall board panels are excellent.

Types of Wall Board Panels

Types: slat panels (wooden slats with gaps, modern), fluted panels (vertical grooves, Art Deco), 3D panels (geometric shapes, dramatic), and shiplap (horizontal boards, farmhouse). My wall board panels are slat panels - very popular in modern Dubai homes. For a contemporary bedroom, choose slat or fluted. For a living room, choose 3D panels for drama. For a coastal home, choose shiplap.

Materials for Wall Board Panels

Materials: real wood (expensive, needs sealing), MDF with veneer (affordable, stable), and PVC (lightweight, waterproof, looks plastic). My wall board panels are MDF with oak veneer. The cost was 400 AED per panel (1.2m x 2.4m). Real wood would be 800 AED per panel. For a dry room (bedroom, living room), MDF with veneer is fine. For a bathroom or kitchen, choose PVC (waterproof) or real wood with marine varnish.

Installing Wall Board Panels

Panels can be glued (to smooth walls) or screwed (to studs). My carpenter near me team glued the panels to the wall using construction adhesive. The joints between panels are invisible (butted together). For a wall with curves, panels can be cut to shape. For a wall with outlets, cut holes in the panels before installation. For DIY, installation is possible (cutting with a jigsaw, gluing). For a large wall (4+ panels), hire a professional.

LED Lighting with Slat Panels

Slat panels have gaps that can hide LED strip lights. My wall board panels have LED strips in the gaps (warm white). The lights create a dramatic effect in the evening. For a bedroom, choose warm white (relaxing). For a living room, choose RGB (color-changing) for parties. For a home office, choose cool white (energizing). The LED strips cost 200 AED for 10 meters (including controller).

Maintaining Wall Board Panels

Dust collects in the gaps of slat panels. I vacuum my wall board panels weekly with a brush attachment. For veneer panels, avoid water (can damage the veneer). For PVC panels, you can wipe with a damp cloth. For real wood panels, dust only (water can cause warping). For a home with allergies, slat panels are not ideal (dust traps). For a low-dust home, slat panels are fine.

Cost of Wall Board Panels in Dubai

Wall board panels cost 200-600 AED per panel (1.2m x 2.4m) depending on material. My wall (3m x 2.5m) needed 3 panels = 1,200 AED (400 AED/panel). Installation cost 500 AED. Total 1,700 AED. Painting the same wall would cost 500 AED. wall board panels are more expensive but add texture and value. For a feature wall (one wall in a room), splurge. For all walls (entire room), the cost is high (5,000+ AED).
